Fright Night 2011

Here we go again folks. Another remake. My opinion on these remakes is that they production companies are getting too Conservative and do not want to put out money for something new and innovative for fear they won't make the money back. My two cents. For instance, I saw a script I liked that was not picked up by any production company and I thought it was a good idea.
With that said, Fright Night was good, not great. The humor was still there and the idea was still the same. The film was different enough from the original that you might still like it even though you enjoyed the cheesy 1980's original.
Jerry (Colin Ferrel)  is hot in this film but there is not an air of sexiness. He is pure evil. No intention of anything other then running the world with his minions. Jane Brewster (Toni Collette) is completely involved in this film and Peter Vincent ( David Tennant) I feel stole the show. This film did not have one specific lead character like the first one did. It was a team affair this time around. Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) was not the geek of the first film. In my opinion, this film took areas from the original that were not elaborated on and chose those to build a script on. You are welcome to disagree, I love discussing these things.
I liked the film because it was so different than the first and it was rated R so it felt more real to me. I did not love the film however. I would wait for the DVD and rent it. In Joe Bob Briggs world I would give it 2 stars.

  1. It's kind of funny that the original was as a "re-imagining" of the classic movie monsters. Since at the time the classics were moving out and the new slasher genre was moving in. The studio thought Fright Night was just a through away movie. But it brought back the classic monsters in the newer time settings, like Lost Boys. Now they remake a re-imagined movie. LOL
I'm just glad Chiller went ahead and made a movie based on the novel by Brian Keene (Ghoul). Now if only they'd use his zombie novels before the zombie movie marry-go-round swings back around.
    Thanks for the review.
Oh and P.S. have you seen Stake Land? It's interesting.

  2. Remakes are always a hot topic with people. Like I said in my review, I don't like reviewing them because a lot of people take the original to heart and feel you are trashing it if you like the remake. After reading your review, I kind of have that feeling you took the original to heart, and didn't want to go overboard with liking this movie. You said more good things than not, so what were things you didn't like about it? In other words, don't hold back, you know you liked it!
